  • Description

Thailand's King Phumiphol and Queen Sirikit were warmly greeted by President Eisenhower when they arrived in Washington, June 28, on a 5-day state visit. During a ceremony at the airport, the President spoke of "perfect friendship" between the two countries.

King Phumiphol - born in the United States - while his father was studying at Harvard - said that he was returning to his motherland and felt that his visit would strengthen its bends with Thailand, which had been so good for so long.

The 32-year-old King is an ardent jazz fan and saxophone player, and has played with America's Benny Goodman and Jack Teagarden when they visited Bangkok. It is reported that King Phumiphol may visit Goodman during his stay.

After their U.S. visit, the Thai King and Queen will make an extensive tour of Europe. Based in Switzerland they will make State visits to fourteen countries. On July 19 they arrive in London for a 2-day State visit followed by a 2-day private visit.
