TRANSCRIPT (SEQ 2) GENERAL SIILASVUO: "Peace the prevailed in the UN buffer zone in the Sinai for the last thirteen months -- that is since the implementation of the disengagement agreement. There has been no significant breaches of the agreement and the parties have given full assistance to the UN Force. I am convinced myself, and I thick that the parties agree that the presence of the UN in our buffer zone in the Sinai has played a crucial role in maintaining the peace. It is evident that the peace-keeping mechanism of a rather wide UNEF zone and having on both sides of the zone limited forces areas has proved to be a very good peace-keeping mechanism."

Background: The Officer Commanding the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) in Sinai, General Ensio Siilasvuo, said the presence of the UN peace-keeping force was a significant factor in maintaining peace in the region.
In a statement this week, General Siilasvuo said there had been no significant broaches of the disengagement agreement, implemented 13 months ago.
He added that he was convinced that he parties concerned agreed that the presence of the United Nations force in the buffer zone played a crucial role in holding the peace.
General Siilasvuo made the statement after the Security Council of the United Nations voted for the UN peace-keeping force to stay in the Sinai for another three months.
The northern section of the UN buffer zone is manned by a force of about 500 men and officers from Sweden under Colonel Lars Eric Wahlgren, who is also responsible for UN observation of the Limited Forces Zone on the Israeli side.
