Mr. Alieu Suleyman Jack, Speaker of the Gambian House of Assembly, on a private visit?

  • Description

Mr. Alieu Suleyman Jack, Speaker of the Gambian House of Assembly, on a private visit to West Germany, on Thursday (October 29) visited the rapidly growing site of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.

Mr. Jack, who began his political career in 1950 when he was elected a member of Bathurst Town Council, is scheduled to visit several centres in West Germany, including Bonn and Frankfurt.

In Munich, which in 1972 will be host to the world's top athletes for the Olympic Games, he was taken on a conducted tour of the many new buildings, stadiums and sports arenas which are mushrooming in their ultra-modern shaped from a once barren site.

Mr. Jack saw much of the 1,200,000 square metres at Oberwiesenfeld to the north of the city of Munich. Some 10,000 athletes will be housed in comparative luxury in the Olympic Village.

Preparations for the gigantic building operation began almost three years ago.

The main stadium will be capable of seating 80,000 people. It will be flanked by a sports palace - capacity 12,000 persons - a swimming pool (capacity 10,000), a sports hall (capacity 8,000), and several other stadiums.

All the buildings and stadiums are taking shape as elaborate constructions of steel and concrete, roofed with translucent material in tent-like designs that will give the Village a unique appearance.

A television tower 920 feet (307 metres) tall, with a revolving restaurant at the top, dominates the site.

A recent estimate of the cost of construction the Olympic site put the figure at around 82-million sterling.
