  • Description

VAST AREAS OF NEW SOUTH WALES ARE THREATENED BY THE WORST PLAGUE OF LOCUSTS AUSTRALIA HAS SEEN FOR 30 YEARS. MASSIVE SWARMS HAVE BUILT UP IN THE CULARGAMBONE AREA 330 MILES (530 KM) WEST OF SYDNEY. FROM THIS OPEN GRAZING COUNTRY THEY THREATEN THE RICH FARM LANDS STRETCHING FROM HUNTER VALLEY IN THE NORTH TO RIVERINA IN THE SOUTH.

ABOUT 2 1/2 MILLION ACRES (ONE MILLION HECTARES) WERE ALREADY INFESTED BY THE BEGINNING OF THIS MONTH, AND THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE HAS PUT IN SIX SPRAYING AIRCRAFT TO TRY TO PREVENT THE PLAGUE FROM SPREADING.

BUT THE BREEDING CYCLE OF THE LOCUST, IN WHICH THE MALE STANDS BY THE FERTILISE THE FEMALE EVEN AS SHE IS LAYING HER EGGS, MAKES CONTROL OF THE PEST A DIFFICULT OPERATION. ALREADY BANDS OF LOCUSTS STRETCHING MORE THAN 100 MILES (160 KM) HAVE BEEN MAPPED IN PREPARATION FOR SPRAYING OPERATIONS.

CLOSE INSPECTION REVEALS AN ORGY OF MATING AND EGG-LAYING AMONG THE WRITHING, CRACKLING HORDES.

THE SPRING IS OVER, AND SPRAYING OPERATIONS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE LONG, HOT SUMMER.

THE EXPERTS HOPE THAT NEW POISONS AND IMPROVED AERIAL SPRAYING TECHNIQUES WILL HELP THEM CONTAIN THE LOCUSTS IN THEIR PRESENT AREA. THEY WANT NO REPETITION OF THE LAST BIG PLAGUE OF 1953, WHEN LOCUSTS DEVASTATED HUGE AREAS OF CROPS, PASTURES, ORCHARDS AND MARKET GARDENS.

THE OLD-TIMERS ARE EVEN DRAWING COMPARISONS WITH THE RECORD PLAGUE OF 1935, WHEN THE HOPPERS EVEN STOPPED TRAINS BECAUSE THE LOCOMOTIVE WHEELS COULD NOT GRIP THE RAILS THROUGH THE MILLIONS OF CRUSHED LOCUST BODIES.
