  • Description

A MASS FUNERAL SERVICE FOR 289 MINERS KILLED THREE DAYS BEFORE IN ONE OF GERMANY'S WORSE COLLIERY DISASTERS WAS HELD AT A PARK IN THE MINE AREA AT SAARBRUECKEN, FEBRUARY 10.

WREATHS FROM MINING ORGANISATIONS ALL OVER THE WORLD, FROM THE GOVERNMENT, FRIENDS AND RELATIVES, PAID TRIBUTE TO THE MEN WHO DIED WHEN METHANE GAS EXPLODED 1800 FEET BELOW THE GROUND AT THE LUISENTHAL MINE AT VOLKLINGLEN. MINERS' LAMPS AND OTHER PATHETIC POSSESSIONS - SYMBOLS OF THE MINER'S TRADE - WERE PLACED WITH MANY COFFINS.

THE WEST GERMAN PRESIDENT, DR. HEINRICH LUEBKE, WAS THE PRINCIPAL SPEAKER AT THE MEMORIAL SERVICE. HE CALLED FOR IMPROVED SAFETY METHODS IN THE MINING INDUSTRY, SAYING "THIS HORROR MUST NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN." MASS WAS SUNG BY A MINERS' CHOIR IN TRADITIONAL COSTUME.

ANOTHER 81 MINERS WERE STILL IN HOSPITAL AND IT WAS FEARED THE DEATH TOLL WOULD RISE EVEN HIGHER AS 21 RESCUE TEAMS CONTINUED TO SEARCH FOR BODIES AMONG THE GALLERIES BLOCKED BY FALLEN COAL AND ROCK. THE DISASTER OCCURRED TWO HOURS AFTER 800 MEN REPORTED FOR WORK. A FIREDAMP BLAST CAME SOON AFTER THE SHIFT WAS TAKEN DOWN - A 100 YARD LONG SHEET OF FLAME WHICH ROARED THROUGH THE MAIN SHAFT.

THE PIT, OPENED THREE YEARS AGO, WAS KNOWN TO BE DANGEROUS BECAUSE OF GAS, BUT WON A PRIZE IN THE SAAR FOR ITS SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.
