Their discussions will cover the Middle East situation in general, and the distribution of U.S. aid and arms. U.S. Secretary of State, Dr Henry Kissinger, will also sit in on the talks as well as holding his own meetings with King Hussein.

Accompanied by his wife Queen Alia, King Hussein arrived at the White House to a military fanfare. The King reviewed a guard of honour and made a short speech before starting discussions with President Ford and Dr Kissinger.

The Jordanian leader is also to meet with U.S. Congressional leaders before beginning a week's private stay in the US.

The current tension on the Israeli-held West Bank is expected to be looked at detail by the King and President Ford. King Hussein has previously rejected Israeli proposals for Jordanian rather than Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) control of the area.
