  • Description

The Ghanaian parliament appointed two committees on Monday (17 September) to prepare for the handing over of power from the army to civilian President elect Hilla Limann on October 1. The country has been under military rule for the past eight years. In June, Flight-Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings staged a new military coup. On Monday (10 September) one of the fifteen members of the present Armed Forces Revolutionary Council, Lieutenant Commander Henry Apaloo, died in hospital following an automobile accident on Accra's Nsawam Road. He was only thirty-five and was buried with military honours in Accra on Saturday (15 September).

SYNOPSIS: The service was held in Burma Hall and attended by many high-ranking officers of Ghana's armed forces.

Glowing tributes were paid to Commander Apaloo by Revolutionary Council leader Jerry Rawlings.

He said the Commander had typified the council's aspirations of providing the country with a secure, moral basis in leadership and of rooting out corruption at all levels. Flight-Lieutenant Rawlings then expressed his condolences to Mrs. Apaloo, who is left with three children.

Later, Flight-Lieutenant Rawlings went on national radio to broadcast another tribute to the late council member. He praised Commander Apaloo for his services to the Ghanaian Navy and for helping to formulate and share the Council's ideal of "an era of government with moral fibre."
Flight-Lieutenant Rawlings said that Commander Apaloo hand served with distinction and merit, and suggested that his death may have been caused by overwork, resulting from his dedication to his job and his country.

As a final mark of respect for the Commander, a salute was fired at his gr???side.
