  • Description

The International Automobile Federation met in Paris on sunday (9 December) to discuss the impact of the world oil crisis on motor sports. As governments face ever-decreasing oil stocks, there are fears among the motoring fraternity there will be bans and restrictions placed on their sporting events. The french government has already placed a ban on such events, and the Monte Carlo Rally was postponed in the wake of the announcement.

Motor racing experts fear the threat to motor sport will be more than a temporary inconvenience; to them the situation is very complex. In france alone, between 12,000 and 15,000 people make their living from motor sports -- from drivers to motoring correspondents. A dilemma facing many more racing teams is whether to disband or not. They rely heavily on sponsors to subsidise their expensive overheads and, ironically, the biggest sponsors are the petroleum companies.

Sunday's meeting of the International Automobile Federation was opened by the Federation's President, Prince Metternick.
