  • Description

A ten-ship Soviet naval task force left Hawaiian waters for home on Wednesday, leaving behind it charges that it polluted coastal waters with oil.

The U.S. Coast Guard radioed the Commander of the Soviet force about the alleged pollution, which it claims took place only 20 miles (32.12 kilometres) from the Hawaiian islands.

A 1954 International Convention prohibits the discharge of oil within 50 miles of land.

The U.S. navy has no explanation for the unexpected appearance of the Soviet flotilla on Monday in Hawaiian waters. It comprised a light cruiser, destroyers, submarines, and an oiler.
