  • Description

TWO DAYS OF DEMONSTRATIONS BY FRENCH FARMERS, ANGERED AT THE GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE TO AGRICULTURE, BEGAN TODAY (SATURDAY). AT SENS, ABOUT SIXTY MILES SOUTH-EAST OF PARIS, A LARGE NUMBER OF LOCAL FARMERS MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS WAVING PLACARDS PROTESTING AGAINST PRESIDENT DE GAULLE AND THE FRENCH MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE, M. PISANI.

THE FARMERS ENDED THEIR MARCH OUTSIDE A WATER-MILL OWNED BY THE LOCAL MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT. THERE THEY HEARD SPEECHES BY THEIR LEADERS, WHILE A DEPUTATION WAS SENT TO THE MEMBER REQUESTING HIS SUPPORT.

THE FARMERS ARE DEMANDING HIGHER PRICES AND SUBSIDIES AND ARE INCENSED BY PRICE-FIXING IN THE COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES. CONSUMERS MEANWHILE ARE ANGERED BY THE FARMERS' APPEALS TO THE GOVERNMENT AND CALL FOR PRICE REDUCTION.

THE AGRICULTURAL DISPUTE HAS BEEN UNDER DISCUSSION IN THE FRENCH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY. A GROUP OF MEMBERS REPRESENTING THE DEMOCRATIC CENTRE, THE DEMOCRATIC UNION AND THE SOCIALIST PARTIES HAS PUT FORWARD A MOTION OF CENSURE AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT FOR ALLEGEDLY NOT UPHOLDING AN AGRICULTURAL LAW PASSED IN AUGUST 1960. THE MOTION SAYS THAT THE GOVERNMENT'S FAILURE TO IMPLEMENT THE LAW HAS MEANT THAT THE PROVINCES, DEPENDENT UPON AGRICULTURE, HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DEVELOP THEIR ECONOMIES.
