  • Description

The Jerusalem city authorities have said that the latest explosion in the city, which killed one person and injured several others on sunday (20 July), was caused by gas canisters in a block of flats. At first the Police believed that the blast had been caused by a bomb placed by Arab guerrillas.

The explosion occurred in the early afternoon in the Kiryat Yovel quarter of the city. It ripped the walls off three floors of the building, which is situated in Brazil Street. The fire brigade, wrecking squads and security forces were on the scene within minutes.

Sunday's blast came just two weeks after Arab guerrillas killed 14 people with a bomb hidden in an old refrigerator, which was left standing in Zion Square, Jerusalem, during the rush hour. More than 70 people were injured in that blast.

Later on Sunday, the Palestinian News Agency, (WAFA), based in Beirut, Lebanon, said that Palestinian Commandos there had claimed responsibility for the explosion. But it gave no details that might indicate which guerrilla group was involved.

Jerusalem police experts said later that the explosion had occurred in the fourth floor of the block of flats. The injured included six children and two women. Other residents of the block had to be evacuated to hotels because the building was in danger of collapse.
