Background: The sixty-five entrants in the 1974 Miss. Universe contest took a break from judging in Manila on Tuesday (July 16) to meet President Marcos of the Philippines.
Mrs. Marcos, a former beauty queen, was also present.
Judging in the pageant, which is being held for the first time in Asia, continues over the rest of this week. President Marcos praised the contest, saying it succeeded where politicians had failed by uniting the world in a common cause.
The judging panel has already narrowed the field for the title of Miss. Universe 1974 down to 12 semi-finalists. However, the chosen 12 will not be named until the final next Sunday.
Two of the entrants, however, already have been awarded titles. Kim Jae-kyu of South Korea was awarded the Best Costume trophy while Finland's Johanna Raunio was judged Miss. Photogenic by news photographers.
