Background: Basque sympathisers demonstrated outside the Spanish Embassy in London today (Sunday, 13 December), protesting against the political trial in Burgos, Spain, of 16 alleged Basque nationalist guerrillas. The demonstration was noisy but not violent.
About 300 of the demonstrators gathered in Trafalgar Square. The Basques among them were joined by Catalonians and other exiles form Spain. Many of them hid their faces for fear of being recognised.
The march lasted nearly two hours. The demonstrators stopped first outside the Spanish Tourist Office where they chanted slogans against President Franco. Then they moved on to the Embassy.
Because of the fighting on Saturday at demonstrations by Spaniards in Berne, Switzerland, and other parts of Europe, extra police had been called in, but the protest was non-violent. Four coachloads of police were stationed outside the Spanish Embassy but the demonstrators confined themselves to shouting and waving their fists before dispersing.
