  • Description

Italian hospitals provided only restricted emergency services as 100,000 of the country's 130,000 doctors and dentists were called out on a 48 hour strike on Monday (29 July) in protest against Government plans for settling the huge debts now contracted by the various health insurance funds. The strike is also intended as an expression of no confidence in the Government's proposals for the creation of a national health service. The proposals are due to be approved by the Italian Cabinet this week.

The doctors are seeking new contracts and the construction and improvement of hospitals.

"We have old buildings, few beds and poor facilities", said Dr. Giovanni Crisci of Rome.

"The State has been talking of new hospitals for years, but they never come".

Italy's three main trade union confederations view the strike as unjustified.
