  • Description

In Paris last night (Tuesday December 29) more than 5,000 people marched to the Place Clichy demonstrating against the sentences passed on the Basque Nationalists tried in Burgos recently. The demonstration was called by the extreme left party, the "Secours Rouge", joined by the PSU (Unified Socialist Party).

The demonstrators carried red flags, chanting "Franco-assassin". As it broke up, a group eluded the police squads and raced down a street smashing windows. A French bank was set on fire, but firemen soon put out the blaze.

The Burgos verdicts--which included six deaths sentences--caused widespread outrage in France, as in other parts of the world, and many demonstrations were called by trade unions and political and student organisations.
