  • Description

The day after his discharge from the Walter Reed Military hospital September 9 - where he had been kept for 11 days with a knee injury - Vice-President Nixon, Republican Presidential candidate, left his Washington home for his office to launch straight into preparations for the 9000-mile major tour of his election campaign, starting September 12.

Aided by Admiral Arthur Radford, chairman of the "Servicemen for Nixon and Lodge" committee, Mr Nixon got to work on speeches for his campaign while press agent Herbert Klein gave details of the tour to reporters.

One of the main themes of his speeches will be to reject Democratic claims that the Republicans have allowed America to sink to second place behind Russia, both economically and militarily.

Senator Kennedy, the Democratic candidate, has announced that he will answer religious attacks made upon him in a major speech at Houston, Texas. His headquarters said committees were being formed "to combat anti-Catholic prejudice" in at least 40 states. In reply, Mr Nixon repeated the statement he has been making since his nomination in Chicago, namely that if the religious issue were raised it would not be by him.
