  • Description

FRANCE PULLED OFF A GREAT SURPRISE DURING HER ATHLETICS MATCH WITH THE SOVIET UNION IN PARIS TODAY BY WINNING ALL SIX TRACK EVENTS IN THE DAY'S PROGRAMME AND LEADING BY 56 POINTS TO 50 AT THE HALF-WAY STAGE. ROGER BAMBUCK, THE FRENCH COLOURED SPRINTER, STAKED HIS OWN CLAIM TO A PLACE IN THE EUROPEAN TEAM TO MEET THE UNITED STATES BY WINNING THE 100 METRES AND PLAYING A BIG PART IN THE FRENCH 4 X 100 METRES RELAY VICTORY.

IT WAS A FINE DAY FOR BAMBUCK, WHOSE TIME FOR THE 100 METRES WAS 103 SECONDS. THE TIME FOR THE 4 X 100 METRES RELAY WAS 39.4 SECS, AND WADOUX DID HIS 5,000 METRES IN 14 MINS 7 SECS.

WADOUX HAS TAKEN OVER FROM MICHEL JAZY -- NOW RETIRED FROM INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION -- AS FRANCE'S LEADING DISTANCE RUNNER, AND ALTHOUGH HIS TIME WAS SLOW, THE RACE WAS RUN IN A TEMPERATURE IN EXCESS OF 80 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT.

FOR THE SOVIET UNION, TER-OVANESYAN, RUSSIA'S EUROPEAN RECORD HOLDER, WON THE LONG JUMP WITH 8.05 METRES (26 FEET 4 3/4 INS) TO GIVE HIS SIDE OF ONLY THREE WINS IN TEN EVENTS.
