    PRESIDENT KENYATTA WENT TO THE NAVY HEADQUARTERS AT MOMBASA YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) TO WELCOME THREE NEW PATROL VESSELS FROM BRITAIN,WHERE THEY WERE BUILT FOR THE KENYAN NAVY. THE SHIPS, THE SIMBA, CHUUI AND NDOVU, HAD LEFT ADEN THE PREVIOUS DAY ON THE FINAL LAP OF THEIR 5,000 MILE (8,000 KLM) VOYAGE.

    MOMBSSA IS KENYA'S INDIAN OCEAN PORT. PRESIDENT KENYATTA FIRST SAW THE BOATS AS THE ROUNDED A POINT AND FIRED A SALUTE IN HIS HONOUR BEFORE HEADING FOR THE NAVY'S MTONGWE JETTY. A TRANSLATION OF THE BOAT'S NAMES IS -- SIMBA (LION), CHUUI (LEOPARD) AND NDOVU (ELEPHANT). SOME 400 GUESTS INCLUDING CABINET MEMBERS ALSO ATTENDED THE WELCOMING CEREMONY.

    AFTER REVIEWING A GUARD OF HONOUR, PRESIDENT KENYATTA WENT ABOARD SIMBA -- NOW THE FLAGSHIP OF THE KENYA NAVY -- FOR AN INSPECTION TOUR. HE ALSO MET THE PREDOMINANTLY KENYAN CREW, WHO WERE TRAINED BOTH AT MTONGWE ADN PLYMOUTH, THE BRITISH NAVAL TRAINING CENTRE IN SOUTH WEST ENGLAND. MOST OF THE CREW WERE FLOWN TO ENGLAND FROM KENYA EARLIER THIS YEAR.

    ALTHOUGH THE PUBLIC WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ACROSS TO MTONGWE TO SEE THE NEW NAVY BOATS AT CLOSE QUARTERS, A SPOKESMAN FOR THE KENYA NAVY SAID THE MTONGWE JETTY WOULD BE FLOODLIT AND SIGHT-SEERS WOULD BE ABLE TO SEE THE SHIPS FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HARBOUR.

    THANKING BRITAIN FOR HER ASSISTANCE IN SUPPLYING BOATS, PRESIDENT KENYATTA SAID THEY WOULD GREATLY STRENGTHEN KENYA'S ARMED SERVICES.

    "BASICALLY THE KENYA NAVY IS A PROTECTIVE FORCE AND AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT IN KEEPING THE PEACE. THIS SERVICE MUST BE READY AT ALL TIMES TO ASSIST SHIPS AND AIRCRAFT IN DISTRESS ADN TO AID OR PROTECT OUR FISHERMAN.", HE SAID.
