  • Description

Los Angeles, on the United States' Pacific coast, is making a bid to stage the 1980 Olympics. The final venue will be decided on Wednesday (23 October) during a meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Vienna.

The only other city competing to stage the Games, is Moscow.

Los Angeles city officials are optimistic they can win the vote of the majority of the 75 members of the IOC even although they admit that Moscow is favoured to get hie Games.

Los Angeles hosted the Games in 1932 and unsuccessfully bid for them in 1976. The officials say their city has unrivalled sporting facilities.

The admit that Moscow is the favoured contender and say the fact the Olympics will have been held in North America twice within the decade -- in Mexico City in 1968 and Montreal in 1976 -- will go against their application.

A 105,000 seat colosseum was build for the 1932 Games and this would be the centre-piece if the Games were held in Los Angeles in 1980.

Within a 10 mile (15 kilometre) radius of this are half a dozen stadiums ready to stage other events.

Officials say all that would be needed is an Olympic pool complex and a venue for the equestrian events.

The City's mayor, Tom Bradley, says with these facilities available the staging of the Games would cost the taxpayers nothing.

But at the urging of the U.S. Olympic Committee the city will take a poll of voters to make sure there really is public support for the staging of the Games.

The Russians are prepared to spend vast sums of money on buildings and facilities in their bid to hold the Games. They intend to launch a communications satellite to ensure adequate international coverage of the Games.

One of the main worries is the lack of accommodation, but the Russians say they will build new accommodation to house the expected influx of visitors.
