  • Description

Four men were killed and four more were missing on Sunday (23 November) after a collision in the Mediterranean between a giant United States aircraft carrier and another American worship.

Forty-six men were reported injured in the collision which occurred in the Mediterranean about 70 miles east of the United States NATO base at Sigonella in Sicily.

The injured were ferried to the base by helicopter and the more seriously hurt were then transferred to the United States Naval hospital at Naples. The crash involved the 7,900 ton guided missile cruiser Belknap and the 87,000 ton aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy -- the world's biggest conventional worship.

Ammunition exploded and fires started after the crash. Many of the injured suffered from exposure, cuts and burns as well as the initial shock of the collision. One member of the Belknap's crew said the ship was "like a volcano" afterwards.

United States officials in Gaeta the home port of the sixth fleet said the aircraft carrier was not expected to make for port as it was not seriously damaged.

A formal United States' naval inquiry into the incident has started.
