    A DANCING COMPETION WAS HELD RECENTLY AT NAIROBI CITY STADIUM AS PART OF AN OFFICIAL PROGRAMME TO HELP PROMOTE LOCAL CULTURES. TRIBAL TEAMS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY TOOK PART - AND THE WINNERS WERE THE WAKAMBA DANCERS FROM EASTLEIGH.

    AMONG THE FIRST TO PARTICIPATE WERE THE TRADITIONAL EMBU DRUMMERS AND DANCERS, WITH STRAW SKIRTS AND WHITE HEADGEAR THEY WERE PLACED SECOND IN THE COMPETITION.

    THE KIKUYU DANCERS - A FAVOURITE TRADITIONAL PRESENTATION IN PAIRS.

    FROM BAHATI CAME A GROUP OF WAKAMBA DANCERS AND ACROBATS.

    AN INTERESTING VARIATION - TWO YOUNG INDIAN GIRLS PERFORMING A TRADITIONAL CLASSIC DANCE INDIA. THEY WERE PLACED THIRD IN THE OVERALL COMPETITION.

    FINALLY, THE WAKAMBA DANCERS FROM EASTLEIGH - ONLY ABOUT 5 MILES (8 KILOMETRES) NORTH - EAST OF NAIROBI - WHO DID NOT HAVE TO TRAVEL FAR TO WIN FIRST PLACE.

    PRESIDENT KENYATTA IS REPORTED TO BE PARTICULARLY FOND OF TRIBAL DANCING AND HAS ENCOURAGED THIS TYPE OF COMPETITION TO HELP KEEP THE NATIVE CULTURES ALIVE.
