  • Description

President Soekarno of Indonesia announced his country's severance of diplomatic relations with Holland on the 15th anniversary of Indonesian freedom from Dutch rule , Aug 17.

Dutch refusal to leave west New Guinea (West Iran) was cited as the reason for Indonesia's action.

President's Soekarno's announcement met thunderous cheers by the mammoth crowd assembled in front of his merdeka (freedom) palace in Djakarta. Dr. Soekarno described the Dutch as "increasingly stubborn" and Holland as "a country of small creditors which has fallen already."
The announcement followed Dutch reinforcement of Dutch New Guinea by the aircraft carrier "Karel Doorman" and modern jet planes which provoked a stormy protest from the Indonesian government.

The Independence Day celebrations in Djakarta was marked by march-past in which units from Indonesia's defence forces and various organisations took part. Colour and gaiety was provided by young men and women dressed in the local costumes of Indonesia's provinces.

The President also announced the dissolution of the pro-western Moslem party Masjumi and the Indonesian Socialist Party for their policies which, he said, ran counter to the aims and principals of the state. A man in the crowd screamed protest against the decision and was promptly taken away by policemen.
