SYNOPSIS: Buyers of thoroughbred horses from all over Western Europe gathered in Moscow recently for the first Spring horse auction to be held in the Soviet Union.
International buyers have been buying horses bred in the Soviet Union for a number of years, but the sales are usually in the autumn.
The horses come from stud farms near Moscow, and from as far away as the Ukraine.
Horses on show are of many different strains, many of them, already trained, in various sports skills. Some are Arab racers, some steeplechasers, some trotters.
Russian horses have in the past influenced the breeding of American British, and French horses, and helped to produce outstanding sporting horses.
Last year visiting buyers had a chance to purchase the sons and daughter of Anilin, one of Russia's most famous race horses.
This sale was highly successful, and it looks likely that these Spring occasions will become an established institution.
