  • Description

An estimated 100 -150 thousand Pakistani refugee children under eight years of age have died of malnutrition in camps around Calcutta. The doctor who made the estimate, a Briton working there with the United Nations Save the Children Fund, accused Indian authorities of partial responsibility for the deaths - and said by January the death toll would have risen to half a million. It was, he said, worse than the infamous Biafran starvation situation.

Following publication of the doctor's estimate and his serious accusations against the Indian Government, VISNEWS cameraman Jagdish Kapoor visited the refugee 'death camps' and one of the hospitals struggling to keep down the toll of lives and misery. His film reflects the serious situation there.
