  • Description

Giacomo Agostini of Italy avenged a series of defeats by the young Venezuelan Johnny Cecotto by beating him in the 350 C.C. event of the Spanish motorcycling Grand Prix in Madrid on Sunday (20 April).

Agostini -- 14 times the world champion -- got off to a quick start and never trailed as he defeated his 19-year-old rival over 38 gruelling laps of the twisting Jarama circuit. Cecotto, who had beaten Agostini four times this season, was slow off the grid, losing precious seconds he never was able to make up.

Agostini covered the 129 kilometres (80.8 miles) in one hour, four minutes and 18 seconds, almost 10 seconds ahead of Cecotto, who came second. Both men drove Yamahas.

Earlier, Cecotto was forced out of the 250 C.C. event while leading it on the third lap when the chain on his bike broke, and the 250 C.C. world champion, Walter Villa of Italy, scored a clear victory in this event, driving a Harley. He covered the 35 laps over 119.151 kilometres (74.5 miles) in one hour and 59.8 seconds -- one minute and 19 seconds ahead of second-placed Patrick Pons of France on a Yamaha.
