Background: Austrian Hans Wallner finished first in the 90 metre (yards) ski jump at Planica in Yugoslavia on 20 March to win the Kongsberg Cup. The event was part of an International Competition held over two days. Wallner's first jump of 110 metres was over 15 metres (yards) longer than his best jump at the recent Winter Olympics where he finished sixth. Fellow Austrian, Karl Schnabl, won on that occasion with jumps of 97 and 97.5 metres (yards). Wallner's second jump was 126 metres (yards).

Despite a longer jump on the second run than Wallner, the Yugoslav, Bogdan Norcic, finished second over-all. Third was Peter Leitner of West Germany.

Also competing were the East Germans, Hans-Georg Aschenbach, and Jochen Dannenberg who were first and second in the 70 metre (yards) event at the Winter Olympics. However, they could not find their earlier form and did not finish in the first six.

The longest jump of the day was that of Lennart Elima of Sweden with a leap of 132 metres (yards) setting a new record for Planica. He finished sixth over-all in the competition. In the team competition, Austria came first, West Germany second and Yugoslavia third.
