  • Description

More than 1,200 low-cost houses are nearing completion at Tema, Ghana. The project is part of an effort to meet an cute housing shortage in Ghana, especially in the Accra-Tema metropolitan area. It is also part of the National Redemption Council's low cost houses scheme which covers the country.

Almost all the building materials used in the Tema project are made in Ghana. The Ghana Aluminium Company provided all the roofing materials and Toff Ltd. supplied concrete blocks for the walls. Cement too comes from local sources.

Traditional thatch roofs give better protection from the sun than European-type roofing materials, according to a report produced in London. But as Ghana becomes more industrialised, thatching materials are difficult to get and urban factory workers have less time to re-roof than seasonally unemployed rural workers had in the past.
