Background: DELEGATES TO THIS MONTH'S AFRO-ASIAN ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE IN INDONESIA ENDED THEIR STAY IN THE REPUBLIC WITH A THREE DAY VISIT TO BALI. RECEPTIONS AND VISITS TO TEMPLES WERE CLIMAXED BY A HUGE PARADE DURING WHICH THE FAMED BALINESE DANCERS PERFORMED CENTURIES OLD DANCES FOR THE STATE GUESTS.

THE STREETS OF DENPASAR, BALI'S MAIN CITY, WERE CROWDED FOR THE PARADE. SPECTATORS AND MUSICIANS MINGLED AT THE ROADSIDE AS THE VAST PROCESSION BEGAN TO MOVE PAST THE REVIEWING STAND. FOR MORE THAN TWO HOURS DANCERS IN THEIR LOCAL COSTUMES AND TEMPLE FINERY RHYTHMICALLY MOVED THROUGH THE CITY'S CENTRE IN A MOBILE PANORAMA, REPRESENTING HUNDREDS OF YEARS OF BALI'S DISTINCTIVE CULTURE.

UNLIKE THE REST OF INDONESIA WHICH IS MOSLEM, BALI'S RELIGION IS A MIXTURE OF HINDUISM AND BUDDHISM WITH TRACES OF THE OLDER FAITH OF THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE. ITS SYMBOLS ARE INDIAN AND CHINESE IN ORIGIN AND THE WHOLE, IN BALI OF TODAY, IS WOVEN INTO THE FABRIC OF EVERYDAY LIFE.

FLOATS AND TEMPLE RELICS HEADED THE PROCESSION WITH THE BEARERS STRAINING UNDER THEIR HEAVY LOADS. THEN FOLLOWED THE POPULAR DANCE OF BARONG AND RANGDA. THE DANCE TELLS THE STORY OF THE CONFLICT BETWEEN BARONG KOKET - A BELOVED, MYTHICAL ANIMAL AND PROTECTOR OF THE PEOPLE - AND THE DEMON-WITCH RANGDA. THE BATTLE RAGES FIERCELY AND A HUMAN OFFERS HIMSELF AS A SACRIFICE WHEN THE OUTCOME SEEMS IN DOUBT. BUT AS GOOD ALWAYS TRIUMPHS, RANGDA IS BEATEN AND DRIVEN BACK TO THE GRAVEYARD.

THE FINALE WAS THE PENDET DANCE, PERFORMED BY YOUNG BALINESE GIRLS. IT SYMBOLISES THE JOYFUL RECEPTION OF THE GODS, WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO ATTEND THE TEMPLE FESTIVALS BUT IS PERFORMED THESE DAYS AS A WELCOME TO DISTINGUISHED GUESTS TO THE ISLAND.
