Background: FIREFIGHTERS FROM THE FRENCH MAINLAND WERE RUSHED TO THE ISLAND OF CORSICA IN THE MEDITERRANEAN ON TUESDAY. THEY WENT TO JOIN ABOUT FOUR THOUSAND MEN ALREADY BATTLING A HUGE BLAZE RAGING THROUGH THE FORESTS NEAR THE EAST COAST OF THE ISLAND.

THE FIRE BEGAN BEFORE THE WEEKEND - AND BY TUESDAY MORNING IT WAS MOVING FORWARD ALONG A TWENTY MILE (30 KMS) FRONT OVER 24,000 ACRES (10,000 HECTARES) OF FOREST, BRUSHLAND AND MARKET GARDENS. FIREMEN - MANY WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK WITHOUT SLEEP FOR MOST OF THE WEEKEND - FOUND THEIR WORK HAMPERED BY WINDS WHICH AT TIMES REACHED 125 MILES AN HOUR (200 KPH).

MAN VILLAGERS HAVE HAD TO ABANDON THEIR HOMES AND PROPERTIES TO THE FIRE - AND IT IS FEARED MANY MORE WILL HAVE TO BE EVACUATED BEFORE THE FLAMES ARE QUELLED.

THE ISLAND HAS BEEN SUFFERING A SEVERE DROUGHT - NOT UNCOMMON HERE DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. THIS, COMBINED WITH THE FRESH WINDS, HAS CAUSED THE FIRE TO SPREAD AT AN ALARMING RATE - AND PROMPTED THE CALL FOR HELP TO THE MAINLAND.

PLANNED FOR THE FIRE FIGHTING OPERATION IS A WATER-BOMBING RAID BY AIRCRAFT.
