  • Description

THE TITAS NATURAL GAS STATION IN EAST PAKISTAN IS NOW OPERATIONAL. IT'S THE LARGEST STATION IN EAST PAKISTAN AND IS EXPECTED TO GIVE IMPORTANT STIMULUS TO INDUSTRIAL PROJECTS IN THE REGION. THE EAST PAKISTAN GOVERNOR, MR. ABDUL MONEM KHAN, INAUGURATED THE STATION AT THE END OF LAST MONTH.

DISCOVERED BY THE PAKISTAN SHELL OIL COMPANY, THE TITAS GAS FIELD IS THOUGHT TO HAVE RESERVES OF MORE THAN TWO MILLION CUBIC FEET. THE SAVING TO EAST PAKISTAN WILL BE SOME 12,000 RUPEES (1050 STERLING) PER DAY.

THE ORIGINAL EXPLORATION WELL AT THE TITAS FIELD WAS DRILLED IN 1962. WORK QUICKLY WENT AHEAD, BUT COMPLICATIONS AROSE BECAUSE OF FLOODING FROM THE TITA'S RIVER, AND VARIOUS SCHEMES HAD TO BE USED TO PREVENT THIS.

IN EARLY 1968 THE TRANSMISSION LINE WAS COMPLETED AND THE INITIAL DISTRIBUTION RATE IS ABOUT FIVE MILLION CUBIC FEET A DAY. THIS WILL QUICKLY TO ABOUT 90 MILLION CUBIC FEET BY 1971.

THE GAS IS BEING USED TO POWER THE HUGE BOILERS AT A THERMAL ELECTRICITY STATION WHICH WAS FORMALLY POWERED BY IMPORTED OIL. BECAUSE OF THIS THERE IS A HUGE SAVING IN FOREIGN EXCHANGE, AND THE COST OF FUEL HAS BEEN CUT BY ABOUT 60 PER CENT.

EVENTUALLY, THOUGH A GRID SYSTEM, THE NATURAL GAS FROM THE TITAS FIELD WILL BENEFIT ALL OF EAST PAKISTAN.
