The United States' new Chief Negotiator at the Vietnam Peace Talks in Paris, Mr. David?

  • Description

The United States' new Chief Negotiator at the Vietnam Peace Talks in Paris, Mr. David Bruce, flew in to Saigon on Friday (July 24) to investigate the possibility of new initiatives at the conference table.

Mr. Ellsworth Bunker, U.S. Ambassador to South Vietnam accompanied Mr. Bruce. Both men had been in consultation with President Nixon earlier in the week. They were greeted at the Saigon airport by Embassy and Military officials.

Mr. Bruce, who is 72, is a distinguished former diplomat and was brought out of retirement to lead the American delegation at the peace talks, in place of Mr. Henry Cabot Lodge. He's expected to try to convince South Vietnamese leaders that some sort of gesture is needed soon in Paris to break the deadlock. It's also thought likely that Mr. Bruce will take advantage of the opportunity to make an "on the spot" assessment in South Vietnam before taking office in Paris.

During the visit Mr. Bruce will have discussions with South Vietnamese leaders who have shown no response to the Viet Cong's Provisional Revolutionary Government offer that some Saigon Ministers might be included in a coalition Government.
