  • Description

SOUTH AFRICAN PLAYED A SPARKLING GAME OF RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL AGAINST FRANCE IN COLOMBES STADIUM, NEAR PARIS, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) AND EMERGED THE VICTORS 16-11. BOTH TEAMS PLAYED ENERGETIC, IMAGINATIVE FOOTBALL, BUT THE SOUTH AFRICAN RESILIENCE AND PERSISTENCE GAVE THEM THE LEAD.

AT HALF TIME FRANCE WAS LEADING 6-3. WITH THE WIND BEHIND THEM IN THE FIRST HALF THE FRENCH PUSHED THE GAME WELL DOWN ONTO THE SPRINGBOKS' 25-YARD LINE. AT THE HALFTIME BELL A VICTORY FOR FRANCE LOOKED IMMINENT, BUT THE SPRINGBOKS DREW UP AND BLUNDGEONED THEIR WAY THROUGH THE FRENCH DEFENCES IN THE SECOND HALF.

THE FRENCH SCORED THEIR EARLY TRIUMPHS FROM TWO EXPERTLY PLACED DROPPED GOALS. SOUTH AFRICA SCORED A PENALTY GOAL FROM 25 YARDS JUST BEFORE THE HALF TIME BELL.

EARLY IN THE SECOND HALF THE SPRINGBOKS' ENGELBRECHT GOT AN EQUALISING TRY WHICH WAS NOT CONVERTED. THEN TWO MORE BLISTERING TRIES BY DE VILLERS AND NOMIS PUT THE SPRINGBOKS INTO THE LEAD. TWO CONVERSIONS VIRTUALLY SEALED THE GAME FOR THEM, WITH THE SCORE 16-6.

BUT THE FRENCH BROUGHT IN ONE LAST BURST OF STRENGTH AND TWO MINUTES BEFORE THE BELL SCORED A TRY FROM A RUN OF 75 YARDS. PARIES OF FRANCE CONVERTED, MAKING THE FINAL SCORE 16-11.
