Background: Santa Claus visited the Ivory Coast capital of Abidjan on Thursday (17 Dec) and President Houphouet-Boigny was on hand to help distribute the presents to local children.
The ceremony was held at the president's residence and the children had been selected according to how well they had done their schoolwork this year. Santa disdained the traditional reindeer and sleigh -- and the air was filled not with the sound of bells, but with the clatter of helicopter blades.
Once on the ground Santa joined the president in the pleasant business of distributing the presents.
As well as a gift, the children present received a big bag of cakes, several packets of sweets, and cool drinks.
The Ivory Coast is just North of the Equator and of course, the warm sunny weather was a complete contrast to the traditional European vision of a snow-covered Christmas season.
