Background: The Anglo-American 'good offices' team of Mr. Beeley and Mr. Murphy called again on French Prime Minister Gaillard at the Hotel Matignon, in Paris this afternoon. There were indications that this interview on the Franco-Tunisian question was not successful. This was not surprising, coming as it did, so quickly after M. Gaillard's buffeting by Independent parties of the National Assembly. The Independents threatend to withdraw their Ministers from the Gaillard Government unless he determined to keep Bizerta and South Tunisia airfields under French control. M. Gaillard threatened also to resign, saying: 'Confidence cannot be shared and if the Independents oblige their Ministers to leave the Government, I will follow their example.' He expected to know their decision tomorrow.
