  • Description

There's a new family at the Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, England.

Almost two months ago, five hungry cheetahs made their way into the pampered world of the Zoo, and made a little history in the process. They're the first cheetahs to be born to captive-bred parents. Their mother Jiffie was born al Whipanade, and father Raoul at Montpellier Zoo, in France.

The quins are almost identical - it's been impossible to name them, so they're simply called "1,2,3,4 and 5." They're among the first animals to be bred under an international "marriage bureau" scheme, organised by zoos to preserve wild creatures.

Each cheetah is worth about GBP 1,000 sterling (approximately 2,400 U.S. dollars). They'll be swapped by Whipsnade for animals from other zoos.

The cheetahs are fed on a high-protein diet, largely consisting of horsemeat. When they're fully grown, they'll be able to run at speeds approaching 60 miles (96 milemetres) an hour.

SYNOPSIS: The father - Raoul, first saw the light of day at the Montpellier Zoo in Marseilles. He's boon kept apart from his young family, but is still close enough to keep a paternal eye on their progress.
