Background: Most of France's 328,000 postal workers went on strike today (Friday) and brought the country's postal services to a near standstill. The workers are seeking better pay improved working conditions.

The strike was the culmination of a series of protests which began on Monday and was timed to coincide with a debate in parliament on the Post Office budget.

Postal distribution, telephone repair and Post Office savings networks throughout the country were at a standstill, according to the four major unions who called for the strikes. The unions said 95 per cent of the postal workers and 80 per cent of the telephonists in Paris and 90 per cent of Post Office employees in the provinces stayed away from work.

The Post and Telegraphs Ministry, however, claimed that only 46 per cent of the Post Office workers in Paris and 38 per cent in the provinces were absent from work.
