    PRESIDENT NKRUMAH HAS TURNED DOWN A SUGGESTION THAT HE WOULD BECOME PRESIDENT OF GHANA FOR LIFE, BUT, HE'S APPROVED OF THE IDEA OF A ONE PARTY STATE.

    THE PRESIDENT, ANNOUNCING THIS IN A 90-MINUTE SPEECH AT TUESDAY'S CEREMONIAL OPENING OF THE THIRD SESSION OF PARLIAMENT, ALSO LAID THAT THE ATTEMPT ON HIS LIFE LAST AUGUST WAS MADE IN A DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO ARREST GHANA'S PROGRESS AND HALT THE FIGHT AGAINST IMPERIALISM. HE ADDED: "BY MEANS OF ASSASSINATION, OUR ENEMIES HOPED TO BREAK DOWN THE UNITY AND PROGRESS THAT GHANA HAS ACHIEVED BY OUR EXERTIONS SINCE INDEPENDENCE."
    HE MADE REFERENCE TO THE STATE OF EMERGENCY IN THE CAPITAL REJECTING
    THE PRESIDENT AGAIN ATTACKED THE EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET AS AN IMPERIALIST DEVICE FOR COLLECTIVE EXPLOITATION OF LESS-DEVELOPED COUNTRIES OF AFRICA.

    AT HOME, HE GAVE THE ASSURANCE THAT THE GOVERNMENT WOULD CONTINUE TO ENCOURAGE PRIVATE INVESTORS AND SAID THERE WAS NO PLAN TO TAKE OVER PRIVATE ENTERPRISES. HE WAS LOUDLY CHEERED AT THE END OF HIS ADDRESS....
    ACCRA HAS BEEN UNDER A STATE OF EMERGENCY FOR 12 DAYS FOLLOWING FOUR EXPLOSIONS AMONG CROWDS WHICH HAVE KILLED 15 PEOPLE AND INJURED MORE THAN 250. POLICE ARE NOW OFFERING A REWARD OF GBP5,000 FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO THE ARREST OF PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE, OR FOR THE RECOVERY OF ILLEGAL ARMS.
