Israel's Prime Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir -- her voice breaking with emotion -- appeared before?
Israel's Prime Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir -- her voice breaking with emotion -- appeared before Israel's Parliament (Knesset) on Tuesday (5 September) and roundly condemned the action of Palestinian guerrillas who that morning had broken into the Israeli camp at Munich's Olympic Village, had shot and killed two team members, and were still holding hostage another nine Israelis. Only hours after the speech, the nine Israelis were also to die in a fierce shoot-out at Munich airport in which at least three of their captors, a Munich policeman and a helicopter pilot were also to die.
In her speech, Mrs. Meir told members of Parliament that nothing could emphasise more the criminal nature of the terrorism being waged against Israel than the murder carried out in the Olympic Village itself - murder which makes a bitter mockery of the spirit of the Olympic Games.
Afternoon newspapers in Jerusalem carried the story of the shootings in the Olympic Village. As the hours passed Israeli radio kept listeners informed of developments as German authorities negotiated vainly for the release of the Israeli hostages. However, Israeli citizens were among the last to know of the fatal shootings at the airport. Israeli radio stations apparently withheld the news until next of kin had been informed.
