  • Description

LEADERS OF EAST AND CENTRAL AFRICAN STATES GATHERED IN KHARTOUM EARLY THIS WEEK FOR A SUMMIT CONFERENCE WHICH OPENED THERE ON MONDAY. THE AGENDA FOR THE CONFERENCE INCLUDED MUTUAL TRADE, THE STATUS OF AFRICAN COUNTRIES AND RHODESIA.

LEADERS WHO ARRIVED ON SUNDAY INCLUDED PRESIDENT JEAN BOKASSA OF THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC, PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA AND THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY, M. DIALLO TELLI. EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE OF ETHIOPIA ARRIVED ON MONDAY, AS DID PRESIDENT JOSEF TITO OF YUGOSLAVIA WHO MADE A BRIEF STOP AT KHARTOUM AIRPORT FOR DISCUSSIONS WITH THE CHAIRMAN OF SUDAN'S REVOLUTIONARY COUNCIL, GENERAL JAAFAR EL NIMEIRY.

THE CONFERENCE, HELD IN KHARTOUM AT THE INSTIGATION OF GENERAL EL NIMEIRY, DISCUSSED THE SITUATION OF AFRICAN COLONIES IN SOUTHERN AFRICA AND CONDEMNED BRITAIN'S ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE RHODESIA ISSUE TOGETHER WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF BOYCOTTING STATES WHICH RECOGNISE THE SMITH REGIME IN RHODESIA. INTER-STATE RELATIONS WERE ALSO ON THE AGENDA.

IN A SPEECH OPENING THE SUMMIT MEETING, GENERAL EL NIMEIRY COMMENTED ON THE MIDDLE EAST PROBLEM, SAYING THAT ZIONISM HOPED TO DEFEAT THE ARAB REVOLUTION AND BRING THE REGION UNDER COLONIAL RULE.

ON NIGERIA, HE SAID THAT ALL AFRICA WOULD BE PLEASED THAT NIGERIA HAD COME OUT OF CRISIS AND ADDED THAT THE COUNTRY WOULD NOW BE FORTIFIED WITH NEW EXPERIENCE THAT WOULD HELP THEM FACE THE FUTURE.

IN RHODESIA, HE SAID, A WHITE MINORITY WAS DEFYING HUMAN MORALITY AND PRACTISED RACIAL DISCRIMINATION, WHILE PORTUGAL WAS COMMITTING BRUTAL SUPPRESSION OF AFRICANS IN ITS COLONIES OF ANGOLA, MOZAMBIQUE AND GUINEA, BUT THE PEOPLES OF THOSE COUNTRIES WERE GIVING A VIVID EXAMPLE OF THE NOBILITY OF AFRICAN STRUGGLE.

SHORTLY BEFORE THE CONFERENCE OPENED ON MONDAY, GENERAL EL NIMEIRY HAD A TWO-HOUR MEETING AT KHARTOUM AIRPORT WITH PRESIDENT TITO OF YUGOSLAVIA WHO MADE THE BRIEF STOPOVER ON HIS WAY TO A STATE VISIT IN TANZANIA.
