TRANSCRIPT (SEQ 6) NIXON: "We recall the great debt we owe to those courageous and daring Spanish explorers who came to the New World so many centuries ago. We think of the heritage we owe to Spanish-speaking peoples in our nation. We recall the fact, for example, that right at this time - next to English - more Americans speak Spanish than any other language. It is our second language."

SEQ 7: JUAN CARLOS: "This trip, and your visit to Madrid several months ago, which we hold in fond memory - as well as our meetings and visits planned here, will contribute to our mutual understanding, which is the cornerstone of the development of our nations. Princess Sofia and I, Mr. President, thank you for your invitation and for this cordial welcome extended by you and your wife."

Background: At the White House in Washington yesterday (Tuesday), President Richard Nixon played host to Spain's King-designate Prince Juan Carlos and his wife Princess Sofia. In his welcoming speech, President Nixon recalled the Spanish discovery of the New World and the fact that Spanish was the second most common language in the United States. Prince Juan Carlos, who is on a five-day visit to the USA, replied saying that he hoped their meetings would "contribute to our mutual understanding".

After inspecting the Guard of Honour, President Nixon addressed the man whom President Franco has chosen as his successor, saying:
Then, speaking through an interpreter, Prince Juan Carlos replied:
During his stay, the Spanish Prince will hold talks with Secretary of State Rogers and with members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee which last year held an inquiry into the U.S. bases in Spain. He will also visit several major cities - ending up in Cape Kennedy for the Apollo 14 launch on Sunday, before returning to New York and leaving for Madrid the same day.
