  • Description

CYPRUS -- AND THE FIRST BRITISH WARNING SHOTS SINCE THE SEVEN-WEEK-OLD PEACH-KEEPING MISSION BEGAN WERE FIRED TONIGHT (TUESDAY). THE INCIDENT CAME AFTER AN ARMY VEHICLE WENT INTO A DUTCH. ITS DRIVER OPENED FIRE WHEN GREEK CYPRIOTS, ATTEMPTING TO FREE THE VEHICLE, WERE FIRED ON FROM A NEARBY BUILDING.

MEANWHILE, FIGHTING BETWEEN GREEK AND TURKISH CYPRIOTS WAS REPORTED FROM THREE AREAS OF THE TROUBLED ISLAND EARLIER TODAY. BRITISH FORCES WERE ORDERED IN TO QUELL THE VIOLENCE.

BRITISH FORCES ARE CARRYING MOST OF THE BURDEN OF TRYING TO KEEP THE PEACE. THEY ARE GETTING SUPPORT FROM THE REGULAR CYPRIOT POLICE FORCE, WHICH, IN TURN, IS SUPPORTED BY UNITS OF THE GREEK AND TURKISH ARMIES STATIONED IN THE ISLAND.

THESE SOLDIERS ARE THERE AS "SECURITY FORCES." FILM BEGINS WITH SHOTS OF GREEK TROOPS TRAINING IN NORMAL ARMY WARFARE. THEY HAVE JUST ARRIVE IN CYPRUS, REPLACING 400 OTHERS WHO HAD COMPLETED THEIR TOUR OF DUTY.

RECENT SCARES ABUT A POSSIBLE TURKISH INVASION MEANT EXTRA TRAINING FOR THE GREEKS, WITH EMPHASIS BEING ON FIELD WARFARE. THEIR NICOSIA BARRACKS WERE FORMERLY OCCUPIED BY THE TURKS.

IN NICOSIA ITSELF, LIFE GOES ON NORMALLY FOR THE GREEK CYPRIOTS, IN SPITE OF TENSION. STREETS ARE THRONGED, AND IT'S BUSINESS AS USUAL ALMOST EVERYWHERE. NEWSPAPER SELLERS ARE DOING A BRISK TRADE AS CYPRIOTS SEEK NEWS OF THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS.

ONE NEWSPAPERS PUBLISHED A CARTOON OF MR KHRUSHCHEV HOLDING THE DOVE SYMBOL OF PEACE. THE SOVIET PRIME MINISTER'S OPPOSITION TO A NATO FORCE IN THE ISLAND HAS PLEASED THE CYPRIOTS OF GREEK STOCK.

BUT NOT THE TURKS, WHO INSIST THEIR SECURITY FORCES MUST REMAIN IN THE ISLAND. THE GREEKS WOULD LIKE A UNITED NATIONS FORCE. LIKE THE GREEKS, THE TURKISH UNITS ARE STATIONED IN THE ISLAND UNDER THE 1959 ZURICH AND LONDON AGREEMENTS, WHICH GAVE THE ISLAND ITS INDEPENDENCE.

THE TURKS, TOO, ARE STEPPING UP THEIR TRAINING. THE PRESENCE OF BOTH THE GREEK AND TURKISH FORCES IS PARTLY TO BLAME FOR THE DEADLOCK AT THE LONDON CONFERENCE ON CYPRUS. NEITHER SIDE CAN AGREE ON AN ALTERNATIVE. THE TURKS ARGUE THAT THE GREEK SUGGESTION TO WITHDRAW BOTH ARMY CONTINGENTS TO BE REPLACED BY AN INTERNATIONAL FORCE WOULD JEOPARDIZE THE FUTURE OF TURKISH CYPRIOTS.
