  • Description

INDIAN TROOPS WHO FOUGHT BRAVELY IN THE BATTLE OF WALONG, IN THE NORTH EAST FRONTIER AGENCY, ARE NOW BACK AT BASE. THEY INCLUDE SEASONED FIGHTING-MEN WHO RESISTED DESPERATE CHINESE ATTEMPTS TO OUTFLANK THEIR POSITIONS. AT THE CAMP, WEAPON-TRAINING, TACTICAL EXERCISES, AND DRILL IS THE ORDER OF THE DAY. THE SOLDIERS ARE UNDERGOING INTENSIVE TRAINING TO RESTORE THEIR FIGHTING ABILITY SHOULD THE TRUCE BE BROKE.

WHEN THE CHINESE ATTACKED IN THIS SECTOR ON 21 OCTOBER, ONLY ONE INDIAN BATTALION WAS IN POSITION. BUT IS HELD ITS GROUND WHILE REINFORCEMENTS WERE HURRIED IN. THREE BATTALIONS WERE FORCE-MARCHED, OR FLOWN IN TINY AIRCRAFT, TO THE 14,000 FEET-HIGH BATTLEFIELD. AS SOON AS IT ARRIVED, ONE UNIT WENT INTO ACTION, AND PUT THE CHINESE TO FLIGHT. THE VALUE OF THE DEFENSIVE OPERATION WAS THAT IT DENIED THE CHINESE A QUICK VICTORY AND CAPTURE OF THE RICH OIL-FIELDS NEARBY.

MR NEHRU SAID TODAY (FRIDAY) IN NEW DELHI, THAT THE "INDIAN PEOPLE MUST NOT LAPSE INTO INDOLENCE AND COMPLACENCY" BECAUSE THERE WAS NO ACTUAL FIGHTING AT PRESENT ON THE BORDER WITH CHINA. HE ADDED THAT THE FIGHTING HAD PREVIOUSLY BEGUN WITHOUT WARNING - AND MIGHT DO SO AGAIN.
