  • Description

PROTESTANT CHURCHMEN FROM 25 COUNTRIES HAVE GATHERED IN THE TOWN OF WITTENBERG, IN EAST GERMANY, TO CELEBRATE THE DAY 450 YEARS AGO THAT MARTIN LUTHER SPLIT THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH WITH PUBLICATION OF HIS "95 THESES". MARTIN LUTHER LED THE REFORMATION WHEN HE DEFIED PAPAL AUTHORITY BY PUBLISHING HIS THESES. A PROCESSION HONOURING BOTH LUTHER AND KARL MARX PARADED THROUGH THE STREETS ON SUNDAY, TO WITTENBERG'S TOWN CHURCH, WHERE LUTHER MADE HIS FAMOUS PROTEST.

CELEBRATIONS OF THE ANNIVERSARY CULMINATE TODAY (TUESDAY) WHEN ABOUT 200 THEOLOGIANS AND CHURCHMEN FROM 25 COUNTRIES WILL MARCH FROM THE HOUSE WHERE LUTHER LIVED TO THE CITY'S TWO MAIN CHURCHES. THE MAIN STREET ON THE ROUTE HAS BEEN DECORATED WITH RELIGIOUS POSTERS AS WELL AS RED FLAGS AND PORTRAITS OF LENIN, SINCE THE CELEBRATIONS COINCIDE WITH THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOLSHEVIK REVOLUTION.

IN SUNDAY'S CELEBRATIONS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE LINED THE MEDIEVALLY-DECORATED STREETS FOR THE PARADE. RESIDENTS OF THE CITY FORMED QUEUES FOR SLICES OF OX ROASTING ON A SPIT IN THE MARKET SQUARE.

WHEN HE VISITED MEDIEVAL ROME EARLY IN THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY, LUTHER WAS DISMAYED AT THE MATERIALISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, PARTICULARLY AT THE SALE OF INDULGENCES TO RAISE MONEY.

AND WHEN THE POPE THREATENED HIM WITH EX-COMMUNICATION, LUTHER MADE AN OPEN ACT OF DEFIANCE BY BURNING THE PAPAL MESSAGE IN WITTENBERG.

IT WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE REFORMATION IN EUROPE.
