  • Description

A volcano has erupted on the little French owned Indian Ocean island of La Reunion near Madagascar.

SYNOPSIS: The 2,000 metre (6,700 feet) Piton de la Fournaise volcano had lain dormant since 1800 -- so the sudden activity caused rapid evacuation of the villages below.

About 1,000 people hurried from their homes as the lava came down. They escaped unhurt but fresh flows last week hit the evacuated village of Sainte Rose destroying the town hall, a garage and 20 houses and endangering the police station and the village church. The lava also destroyed hundreds of acres (hectares) of forest and crops before it poured into the sea.

Volcano expert Haroun Tazieff has warned the island's inhabitants in a radio interview broadcast form the station in the capital Saint Denis that it must be remembered that an eruption is never at its most dangerous at the beginning. There can be a delay of weeks, months or years before the worst lava flows, so the island authorities are still on full alert.
