Background: Six Russian-built MIG-17 fighters of the Royal Afghanistan Air Force roared a welcome to President Eisenhower on his dawn arrival at Kabul's Russian-built airstrip Dec 9, for a five-hour visit during his eleven-nation goodwill tour. King Mohammed Zahir Shan briefly welcomed the American President, and together, in a bitterly cold wind, they inspected a Royal Guard.

Russian influence was very much in evidence as the President and King drove from airstrip to capital - a distance of 40 miles. Russian technicians at the airport, Russian uniformed soldiers lining the route, and a Russian built granary - stocked with American grain.

The President, who had changed to an open car for the last five miles, was given a rousing reception in the City, and was soon speckled with confetti and trailing streamers as he drove beneath a welcoming arch to luncheon at Chilstoon Palace.
