  • Description

THE DECISION TODAY (THURSDAY) BY THE ROME UNIVERSITY SENATE TO CLOSE DOWN TEN FACULTIES OF THE UNIVERSITY HAS ALREADY PROMPTED ACTION BY A GROUP OF STUDENTS IN THE ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL -- THEY HAVE OCCUPIED THEIR FACULTY IN SYMPATHY WITH STUDENTS OF THE OTHER TEN. THE UNIVERSITY SENATE HAS CLOSED DOWN THE TEN FACULTIES UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

LEFT-WING AND MODERATE STUDENTS NARROWLY AVOIDED CLASHING TODAY WHEN BOTH GROUPS MARCHED THROUGH ROME TOWARDS THE UNIVERSITY. THE LEFT-WING STUDENTS CARRIED BANNERS PROCLAIMING THEIR INTENTION TO OCCUPY THE UNIVERSITY, AND THE MODERATES CARRIED SIMILAR BANNERS CALLING FOR AN END TO REBELLION AND A RETURN TO ACTIVE ACADEMIC LIFE. THE ROME UNIVERSITY DEMONSTRATIONS HAVE PREVENTED MANY STUDENTS FROM TAKING THEIR INTERMEDIATE AND FINAL EXAMINATIONS.

ABOUT 100 MODERATES SEEKING A STUDENT REFERENDUM ON UNIVERSITY REFORM SHOUTED "FREEDOM" AS THEY MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS OF ROME. AT THE SAME TIME SOME 200 LEFTIST STUDENTS ALSO DEMONSTRATED, CHANTING "MAO, LIN PIAO, REVOLUTION."
THE PROCESSIONS CONVERGED AND MOVED SIDE BY SIDE FOR SEVERAL HUNDRED YARDS, BUT THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS.
