  • Description

The crowd didn't like the outcome, but when it was over Ghana's David Kotei was the new World Boxing Council featherweight champion. He defeated Mexico's Ruben Olivares in a controversial decision in Los Angeles on Sunday (21 September).

Two judges gave him the match by one point each, and the referee gave it to Olivares by one point. As soon as Kotei lifted his hand in victory, Olivares' supporters lifted their hands to throw bottles and debris into the ring.

Several scuffles broke out and Kotei's trainer, Francis Clotty, was hit in the head with a chair.

25-year-old Kotei is the first fighter from Ghana to win a world title. He knocked Olivares down in the first round and continued to pound a sluggish Olivares for the remaining 15 rounds.

At one point the referee warned Kotei for butting after a cut was opened over Olivares' left eye in the 12th round. But Olivares denied later that he wanted the fight stopped at that point.

California athletic officials have expressed disgust at the behaviour of the Olivares supporters, many of whom were of Mexican origin.
