ON MONDAY, A SHINTO MEMORIAL SERVICE WAS HELD FOR THE DEAD KILLED IN BATTLES WITH AUSTRALIAN TROOPS.

    MR. YOSHIRO KAWAGUCHI, JAPANESE GOVERNOR OF BORNEO DURING THE OCCUPATION, IS THE LEADER OF THE GROUP. HE SAID THE JAPANESE PEOPLE WERE SORRY FOR ATROCITIES COMMITTED IN BORNEO DURING THE WAR. THE COLLECTED REMAINS WERE PLACED IN EARTHEN JARS FOR THE MEMORIAL SERVICE.

    MRS C. KAKUTA, AGED 50, IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE JAPANESE WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION. SHE REPRESENTS THOSE WHO LOST THEIR HUSBANDS AND SONS DURING THE WAR.

    THE EARTHEN JARS WERE ARRANGED ON A HUGE WOODEN ALTAR AT THE AUDITORIUM OF THE BRUNEI MALAY TEACHERS ASSOCIATION.

    OFFERINGS INCLUDED; FRESHLY FRIED FISH, RIPE FRUIT, SAKE VEGETABLES SUGARCANE, UNCOOKED RICE, SALT AND TWO GLASSES OF COLD WATER. THE 40-MINUTE MEMORIAL SERVICE WAS PRESIDENT OVER BY A SHINTO PRIEST, MR. M. HIROSE, WHO HAD ALSO SERVED IN BORNEO DURING THE WAR.
