    The 15th International Koran Reading Contest, held in Malaysia, attracted record entries this year.

    Thirty-six contestants from 14 countries gathered in Kuala Lumpur for the start of the contest on Friday (4 October).

    The nine women and 27 men are from Afghanistan, Brunei, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Iran, Khmer Republic, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, South Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

    The international section of the contest was opened by Malaysia's Yang Dipertuan Agong.......or king. The celebrations included a parade led by five floats followed by a thousand people.

    In his address the King reminded Muslims of the need to progress materially while holding fast to Islamic teachings.

    The international competition -- which ended on Sunday (6 october) -- was preceded by the Malaysian National Competition.

    SYNOPSIS: After the king's address, the competition began; we listen to Koran readers from Pakistan, Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia.
