  • Description

European Labour Ministers meeting in Rome have been told the number of migrant workers in Europe will almost double in the next eight years, possibly reaching II million by 1980.

Italian Senator Giuseppe Vedovate warned the opening session of the three-day conference on Thursday (23 Nov) that unless European countries reached mutual agreements on improving the working conditions--and lives of immigrant labourers, the Continent was in danger of creating a new sub-proletariat.

Attending the conference are Labour Ministers from 17 member countries of the Council of Europe. Some countries like Britain, are represented by junior Ministers while Finland has sent an observer delegation.

Topics of the conference are efforts to find ways of improving the lot of Europe's six million migrant workers - of whom the majority come from Mediterranean regions like Southern Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Yugoslavia and Turkey - and ways to protect young workers in Europe.
